Book Two: The peoples

Part 3: The Tocharian Chapter 24: The Tocharian of Micronesia

Micronesia is a region that includes a set of more than a thousand islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the archipelago of the Caroline Islands, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Mariana Islands, Palau, etc. … We distinguish between low-lying islands are coral atolls, high islands of volcanic origin, which are mountainous Federated States of Micronesia, consisting of 607 islands, include states: Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap The federal capital is Palikir, on the island of Ponhpei

Micronesian prehistory

The first people settled on these islands, there are over 4000 years ago These populations are of Austronesian language A megalithic architecture, forts, horticultural terraces and petroglyphs have been found on the high islands of Micronesia It must also report the existence of archaeological remains on the low islands, as Graves, pillars of the house of assembly, fish traps, cairns, altars, and navigation cues On the atolls of the archipelago and the Phoenix Line, imposing rectangular platforms were discovered

History of Micronesia

A feudal system based on head of clans or councils of elders, was transformed progressively into a centralized economic and religious empire with its capital Yap In the sixteenth century the Portuguese, then Spanish, reached the Caroline Islands Spain established its sovereignty over these islands in 1885, with the blessing of Pope Leo XIII Then the islands came under German control in 1899, and finally Japan in 1914 During World War II, in 1944, the region was militarily occupied by the United States, which the administration as a Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, as mandated by the 1947 UN May 10, 1979, the First Congress of the FSM meets its rooms in Kolonia, and Trust Territories ratify a new constitution to become the Federated States of Micronesia Neighboring districts of Palau, the Marshall Islands and the Marianas, have not joined this federation After ratification of the termination of guardianship by the Security Council UN, 22 December 1990, the WSF adhere to the UN September 17, 1991

The stone house of Taga on Tinian

On Tinian, the Marianas, we find several sites with large stone columns cut at right angles, topped with half spheres These columns are arranged in double rows 6 to 14 megaliths The house of Chief Taga is the best known, with two megaliths still standing The columns are 5.50 m in circumference at the base and the top 4.5om They are 3.70 m high above ground, and support hemispheres of 1.50 m high and 1.80 m in diameter Each monolith weighs over 30 tons There were originally 10 columns forming two parallel rows According to legend, when the last stone will fall, the head will return to Tinian …

Nan Madol in Pohnpei

Nan Madol on Pohnpei Island, Pohn-ah-pay, in the Caroline Islands, consists of 92 artificial islands and was the capital of the dynasty Saudeleur, until around 1500 The name Nan Madol means intervals, which would refer to the channels of the site, often called the Venice of the Pacific There are megalithic walls in blue-black basalt blocks The wall are made of megaliths crossed as the logs of a hut These walls are more than 12 m. high and five M.50 thick These stones, usually hexagonal, more than 3m long come from other islands, away from tens of kilometers … The basalt blocks are about 5 to 10 tons, but the heaviest weighing 50 tons and the blocks are longer than 20 meters …

Inside the outer wall there was an inner enclosure This double enclosure, called naudauwas, must protect the tombs of Saudeleurs, at least this is what archaeologists believe, because the graves are covered with basalt beams identical to those walls In fact, as we realize today that the city of Nan Madol gods date from 2000 BC, it is likely that the fresh graves of Saudeleurs, a late reuse of the site and original beams fell from the wall For some local legends, the stone flew through the air and have put in place all alone … But for more traditional legends, their ancestors had a superhuman strength and had to fly the technical materials such as heavy as stone … Within the city there are streets and stairs connecting giant houses covered with a roof made of one or two flat stone slabs, each weighing several tons Navis Christian, in his book Mysterious Civilization of the Pacific, published by L’Harmattan, says it is not possible to attribute to Saudeleurs, too primitive, the construction of this city As I said earlier, after dropping due to disasters or wars, the city had to be rediscovered and re-occupied by other populations Especially since other such sites exist in Micronesia The legend says that Nan Madol was built by a magician who made the huge logs and stone flew from their place of extraction to the construction site.

Pohnpaid to Ponape

On the coast to inland, we find the site with 750 petroglyphs Pohnpaid remarkable … They represent the feet, hands, the characters, but also objects such as hooks and other fishing implements, and geometric shapes like dots, circles and crosses

The city of Lelu Insaru

The city of giant stone Insaru on the island of Lelu, near Kosrae, was built of logs in huge walls of basalt There are paved roads and a canal system connecting the buildings and neighboring islands The ruins resemble those of Nan Madol, but are less extensive The walls are over 6 feet high, and the megalithic blocks weigh 50 tons

Badrulchau in Palau

At Badrulchau, northeast of Palau, there are 52 megaliths, forming two columns of 3m high, and a pyramid of earth of 7.50 m high dominated by two monoliths and anthropomorphic 6 heads They could have been used to support roofs of houses community

Irrai in Palau

At Irrai, south of Palau, there are 43 platforms of stones, some in the shape of a truncated pyramid The largest of these platforms is approximately 1000 m2

Babeldaob in Palau

On the islands of Palau, or Belau, west of the Carolinas, there are many mounds of earth formed terraces and hills have been carved to resemble pyramids The terraces are more than 4.50 m high and 9-18 m wide The local oral traditions do not speak of these terraces or use … On the island of Babeldaob there are many earth pyramids and terraced hills The highest of these pyramids is 100 m above sea level

Melekeok at Babeldaob
At Melekeok on the west coast of Babeldaob, there are seven megalithic sculptures, there would have been originally 9 These anthropomorphic heads resting on a platform of stone, are carved in a rock and are 1 to 2.50 m high They remind us of the Olmec heads in America, see the beginning of the second part of this book … Bairulchan to Babeldaob Found to Bairulchan on the island of Babeldaob, two rows of large basalt monoliths, some with carved heads Of the 37 megaliths, some weighing up to 5 tons

Pg28-1leluh kosrae

Leluh in Kosrae

At Leluh on the island of Kosrae, also on the east coast, there is a site similar to Nan Mandol It consists of many artificial islands surrounded by walls of basalt There are speakers from 1.50 to 2 m high, cobbled streets and squares lined with walls of 6 to 7 meters high

Mariana Islands

On the Mariana Islands or Chamorro, there are towering wooden structures mounted on foundations megalithic They are called: latte It is found on the islands of Guam, Tinian, Rota and Saipan These megalithic foundations are composed of two rows 6 to 14 stone columns, spaced 3 to 4 meters and topped by a capital in the hemisphere These columns have a rectangular shape at the bottom and a trapezoidal shape at the top They reach up to 5 m high above ground

In Yap, one found paved roads, lined with huge round stones pierced They are up to 3 meters high They are part of building complexes which are lost in the forest … Archaeology has much more work in these islands …

The Tocharian of Micronesia

Everything shows it, in Micronesia, we are in territory Tocharian … Megaliths, petroglyphs, pyramids, giant city as at Mycenae, see the first part of this book … But most interesting is the confirmation by the legends of the megaliths airline … Added to the clarification of their manufacture by laser cutting in the Laotian legends, see Chapter 11 of this third part, the manufacture, transport and installation of huge megaliths thus contains more mysteries …
