The Laos
The Laos , with an area of 236 800 km² , stretches over 1100 km in length , located from 15° 5 up to 25° North latitude , and has a population of about 5.5 million inhabitants , the Lao people
The father De Marini speaks of Lao , in the middle of the 17th century , as the kingdom of the Langiens , Lan Xang , which means a million elephants
He counts it among the bigger powerful kingdoms of the far East of which nobody has never heard from in Europe
The country has no coastline and the relief is formed by
two-thirds of mountains and plateaus
The Mekong is the main artery of the country
History of Laos
The Laotian prehistory is not different from that of the neighbouring countries
At Neolithic times , ceramics and bronze works do not differ from those of neighbouring countries
The bronze civilization of this period was referred to the Dongsonian , named after the contemporary Vietnamese site of Dongson , in Thanh Hoa province
The megalithic monuments , standing stones , stone circles , well graves covered with large circular slabs , are dated from the last 2 millennia BC
The oldest known occupants of the Laos from the historical period are the Kha
Then the Cham , Malaysian Indians , established in the Champ a, occupy the current Southern Laos , the Champassak , during the first centuries of the Christian era
Then they have being ousted in the fifth and sixth centuries by the Khmers , who will establish for several centuries their hegemony on the peninsula of Indochina
In 1353 , victorious of his grandfather who commits suicide , Fa-Ngum , accedes to the throne of Luang Prabang
He gives to the Lao kingdom the name of Lan-Xang , kingdom of the million elephants
He submits the neighbouring principalities and imposes his suzerainty to the prince of Vientiane by seizing his capital
He then extends his kingdom at the South-East up to the Annamite chain and takes control of Chepone before negotiating the course of new borders with the neighbouring Vietnam
Towards the West , he invades the Siamese kingdom of Ayuthia and obtains from the sovereign the payment of a tribute and the hand of his daughter
The new king reformed the local Buddhism and brought a miraculous statue of the Buddha , the Prabang , the saint with covered shoulders , who became the protector of the kingdom and give its new name to the capital :
Luang Prabang , the ancient Muong Xua
In 1404, the new Chinese Ming Dynasty recognized the authority of the Lao ruler over his kingdom
From 1428 up to 1440 , the eldest daughter of the King
Sam-Sen-T’Ai , Nang-Kéo-P’Impa , the Lady Image of a Jewel , placed on the throne seven successive kings , her lovers
She obliged they to commit suicide or let them executed regularly after having reigned in their place
Then she ascends on the throne herself but keeps it only four months before being murdered at her turn
In 1641 , arrived in Vientiane a Dutch merchant , Geritt Van Wuysthoff , whose Journal provides valuable information on the kingdom at the beginning of the reign of Suriyavongsa
It was at this time that the Father De Marini wrote his :
New and curious relationship of the kingdoms of Tonkin and Lao
These are the first contacts established by the Europeans with this mysterious kingdom of the interior of Indochina
In 1753 , the kingdom of Luang Prabang is invaded and looted by the Burmese as the King of Vientiane didn’t go to it rescue
In 1778 , the Siamese seized Vientiane , sacked it , took away the sacred statue of the Buddha and vassalized the kingdom
In 1851-1869 , reign Canta-Kuman , said the son of the Moon

On July 16th , 1884 , a Franco-English treaty recognizes France’s rights over the Mekong valley
In 1885 , Burma passes under the control of England
In 1887 , France created the Indochinese Union regrouping Cochinchine , Cambodia , Tonkin and Annam
In 1898 , the Laos was included in the Indochinese Union at the initiative of Paul Doumer , Governor General of Indochina from 1897 to 1902
In 1921 , the Compagnie saïgonnaise de navigation inherited the monopoly enjoyed by the Messageries fluviales on the navigation of the Mekong
This monopoly will be abolished during the second world war , after allowing these companies to obtain very large public subsidies and the realization of huge profits
On August 29th , 1945 , is proclaimed in Hanoi , the Democratic Republic of Vietnam
On July 20th , 1954 , the signing of the Geneva Accords puts an end to the Indochina War
The independence of Laos and Cambodia are reaffirmed on this occasion
On December 14th , 1955 , Laos is admitted in the UN
In December 1975 is proclaimed the Democratic People’s Republic of Laos
In 1991 , the Revolutionary People’s Party , converted to the market economy , remains a single party and its President and Secretary General Kaysone Vomphihane is elected on August 15th President of the Republic
In 1992 , after the death of Kaysone Phomvihane , Nouhak Phoumsavan becomes at the head of the state
Laos then undertakes to implement a policy of wide opening towards the West , marked in particular by the signing of a pact of friendship and cooperation with Thailand
The Lieutenant General Choummaly Sayasone has become President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic since being elected on June 8th , 2006 , and he will ruled 2 terms
Then Bounnhang Vorachith will be elected in 2016
The legend of the menhirs
Ba Hat , the chief of the Kha Yeui lived in Phon San Ang , and had magical powers
He was very tall and his chest was of 1m 80 !
Between his two eyebrows , the distance was of 20 cm
He ascended to the Heaven , and Phi Then gave him three gifts:
A two-sided drum , one used to remove enemies , the other to call the help of heavenly armies

Back on Earth , Ba Hat refused to recognize the suzerainty of the king of Luang Prabang

Then when a sparrow hawk rushed on a chicken , the struggle of the two birds made noise
The victors believing in the return of the enemy , beat the magic drum
Phi Thén came down from the sky , but seeing no aggressors anywhere he was so furious that he took back the magic instrument
Bahat left with his servants to carve along the Nam Peun stone blocks
They had to go up on the ridge of San Ang and build there the free city of Kong Phan
This city completed , the chief would proclaim himself independent of Vientiane and Luang Prabang
The King of Luang Prabang get angry , but as he was unable to conquer it by force , he resorted to trickery
He sent one of his mandarins , as hypocritical as he was great , to ask for the hand of the daughter of the rebel
Ba Hat , suspecting nothing , consented to it and the marriage took place
The son-in-law of Luang Prabang , very considerate and clever , won the good graces and the complete confidence of his father-in-law’s
He managed to persuade them to put the magic punch and axe on a fiery brazier
These instruments immediately lost their marvellous virtues and Ba Hat had to give up for building his fortress
The stones remained on the pass where they had been climbed and later served to make the menhirs of San Kong Phan and the neighbourhood
The clever son-in-law suggested to his handsome parents to build a wooden building , so high that from the top they would see Luang Prabang
When many people were at the top of the tower , they shouted that they saw the big city of the Mekong
Fully at their astonishment and joy , no one knew what was going on
The excellent son-in-law set fire then the bottom of the building , which collapsed
The deceiver imagined some similar tricks , and the unfortunate mountaineers almost all died
Their rare descendants would be the Phongs or the Pongs

In this province , along the Mekong , which is the border between Laos and Thailand , there are many caves
They have been used for human habitation for many millennia
At Tham Ting , the cave of the Buddhas , the site was particularly laid out during the Buddhist period , but as in all these sites , they are of course a reusing of an older site
There are stone drums , dating back to the Neolithic period , a furniture quite particular to be reported
At Pha tèm , there are more than 300 prehistoric paintings waiting for us on the rock faces , describing animals , hands , rites , scenes of everyday life and hunting scenes

The Plain of jars
In the province of Xieng Khuang , in Phonsavan , the plain of jars is on a high square plateau of about 40 km side
The plain is located at an average altitude of 1200 to 1500 m
At the top of some hills are grouped huge jars of megalithic stone sandstone , limestone and shale
The height of the jars goes up to 3 m , they are buried in the ground
Some are blocked by stone lids
But most lids are broken
Some lids are decorated

There are 3 main sites , spaced of several kilometers apart , and forming all 3 together , a straight line
In each of these 3 sites , there are 150 to 250 jars , the smallest of which is about 2 tons and the largest of more than 7 tons
Elsewhere , on the plateau , there are more than 400 groups of 3 to 10 pieces , scattered in the nature
They were carved in the surrounding mountains , at several hundred kilometers from the plain of jars
In the early 1930’s , excavations let discovered in the middle of the jars a funerary cave
Terracotta vases , polished stone objects , iron instruments , bronze jewellery , glass beads and charred bones were found there

So they already knew the tobacco 5000 years ago …

In the region of Champassak , at the South of Laos , the site of Vat Phou is that of the former capital , from the 5th up to the 7th century
It housed the first known dynasty of the Kingdom of Chenne ancestor of the Angkor kingdom
We found there a 6th century temple and a double stupa from the 7th century
It is more than likely that these religious buildings were built on an even older site , and since then perpetually reused
The Tokharians of Laos
The Tokharians are well spent in Laos , as an evidenced with the megalithic remains that are found there , as well as the legend of the menhirs
The artistic quality of the menhirs is remarkable
Carved in the shale , of an astonishing finesse , they have reached us , without breaking
And what is said in this legend is important , we learn that they cut the stone menhirs with a laser blade
That they had a freshwater detector
And what later civilizations will represent as a drum is actually a laser cannon , equipped with electronic communication
This also explains why these instruments could be destroyed by fire
But it is more than probable that if they could thus be conquered by the cunning of the neighbouring populations , it was because they were no longer the generations of origin of the Tokharians , but their descendants , who still had the instruments of their ancestors but no more their knowledge

The Laotian Tokharians set up an air navigation beacon on the highlands of Xieng Khuang
For this , they dug jars in the nearby mountains , and transported them , probably by air , up to the plain of jars
There they arranged them at the top of the plateau , to make it an effective navigation beacon but also recognizable thanks to the particular disposition of the jars
The jars were then filled with powdery magnetite , which sandy iron ore
The region of Xieng Khuang is known for its iron ore , which has the highest iron content of the world , with more than 70% pure iron ore
We need only to make an analysis of the residues of the jars and we will have the confirmation of it
Because of course , subsequent generations have stolen this easy-to-extract ore to make tools and weapons
The large amount of magnetite arranged in an agreed form allowed the Tokharian aircraft navigation instruments to locate themselves on this beacon

We will see the waltz of the continents , different from the place of the continents according to the tectonics of the plates
Indeed , the Earth’s crust , like a skin , folds, relaxes and even sometimes returns to its place , which means that a continent can appear or disappear or return , of course at its time scale
But if plate tectonics takes place on a time scale of 800 000 years , the waltz of the continents takes place on a scale of less than 100 000 years

I started writing my book in 2004 , based on 40 years of notes , photos and site visits around the world
When I started writing my book in 2004 , I also started my blog presenting my books
This blog has also given me the opportunity to discuss my theories with archaeologists , historians and amateurs
I had the pleasure of authorizing an Indian doctoral student to use part of my research in his doctoral thesis in archaeology
It goes without saying that I was delighted to learn that he succeeds
